Alta Isabel Wyatt, and her twin sister, Alma Iantha, were born on August 22, 1928 in Hardy, Iowa to Oscar and Mae (Larison) Wyatt. She attended and graduated in 1945 from Vernon Consolidated School of rural Renwick, Iowa. She continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) for two years.
Alta moved to Akron and began teaching at Akron Community School. It was there that she met Arden Johnson. They were united in marriage on June 6, 1948 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. To this union, they had two daughters: Boni and Wendi, and they made their home in Akron.
Alta went back to school and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD in 1967. Alta taught school in Akron for 21 years and retired in 1979. Teaching was much more than a job for Alta; she felt called to shape and nurture the minds and hearts of the next generations.
Alta became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1948 where she volunteered in several capacities for the women's circle. She was the Sunday School superintendent and taught Sunday School for many years. Alta and Arden were also active members of the YoMaCo club and their dinner club where they played lots of pinocle.
Alta enjoyed watching sports, especially for any Iowa Hawkeye teams! She enjoyed working with her hands while quilting, knitting, and sewing. She loved cooking and baking. Alta and Arden enjoyed traveling; they took many bus trips around the country and spent many summers camping in Branson or the mountains of Colorado. They also took a very special trip to Japan to visit a former foreign exchange student.
Alta was a dedicated volunteer at the Akron Care Center; she played cards, made cookies, hosted a lemonade stand, played bells, and did many other activities with the residents. She was nominated and awarded the Iowa Health Care Association Volunteer of the Year in 2017.
Alta loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a devoted mom and grandma, and she will be greatly missed.
Alta is survived by her daughters: Boni (James) Lochner and Wendi (Dean) Lakeman; grandchildren: Brandon 'BJ' (Kellie) Markve, Natalie Lakeman, Blake (Brittany) Markve, Alison (Jason) Hair, and Christa (Chris) Kosor; step granddaughter, Jessica (Blake) Beekmann; great grandchildren: Emma Markve, Brecken Markve, Norah Isabel Markve, Bayleigh Markve, Sloan Isabel Hair, Harris Kosor, Arden Hair, Braxton Beekmann, and Brinkley Beekmann; sister in law, Beth Wyatt; nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Alta is preceded in death by her husband, Arden Johnson (2010); her parents; parents in law, Emil and Hulda Johnson; siblings: Virgil (Shirley) Wyatt, Burl (Harriett) Wyatt, Etta (Raymond) Ogan, her twin sister, Alma (Eldon) Seely, and Charles Wyatt; siblings in law: Clifford (Irma) Johnson, Roger (Phyllis) Johnson, Lois (John) Decker, and Phyllis (Alvin) Frisk.
