Once all of her children were in school, she took a job as a secretary at the Department of Human Services in Le Mars. She worked there until they closed the Le Mars office. She then worked various jobs until 1993, when she went to work for Westmar College in Le Mars. She worked there until her retirement in 1995. After retirement, Bernice enjoyed spending time and caring for her grandchildren. Darrell passed away on May 2, 2019. In July of 2021, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Le Mars.
