Obituary

Bonnie Blum , 88, of Merrill, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Unity Point Health – St. Luke's in Sioux City.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa.  Social distancing and wearing a mask will be required.  Brian Mullford will officiate.  Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill.  Visitation with the family present, practicing social distancing and wearing a mask, will be on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Bonnie Lou Blum was born September 21, 1931 in Hinton, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Irene (Junck) Vanderloo.  She attended school in Merrill and graduated from Merrill High School in 1949.  Following high school, she worked for a dental office in Sioux City and later as a clerk for the grocery store in Merrill.

She was united in marriage to Maurice Blum on May 2, 1953 in Lawton, Oklahoma, while he was in basic training.  Following his discharge, they returned to Merrill.  Bonnie went to work for the Farmers State Bank in Merrill.  In 1967, she went to work fulltime for the Post Office in Merrill.  In 1992, she retired as the Postmaster for the Post Office in Merrill.

She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill.  She was also a member of the Wasmer American Legion Auxiliary Post 241 in Le Mars.  She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, Merrill Community Club, Friendship Club, and a 50-yr member of the Merrill Couples Club and Ladies Christmas Luncheon.  She volunteered for many years with Merrill Alumni Association.  Over the years, she enjoyed traveling, golfing, watching and attending many sporting events, playing cards, and walking.

Survivors include her husband of over 67 years, Maurice of Merrill, IA; 2 brothers: Virgil (Norma) Vanderloo of Waterloo, IA, and Curt (Marlene) Vanderloo of Merrill, IA; a sister: Glenda Donlin of Merrill, IA; in laws: Carol Vanderloo of Merrill, IA, Wendel Blankenburg of Norwalk, IA, Pat Vanderloo of Sioux City, IA, Marvin Blum of Bella Vista, AR, Audrey Kennedy of Sioux City, IA, and Jeanette Wankum-Spies of Merrill, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Irene Vanderloo; her siblings: Keith Vanderloo, Rich Vanderloo, Janice Blankenburg, and Stanley (Geraldine) Vanderloo; and in laws: Don Donlin, Dick Spies, and Jerry Kennedy.
