Daniel Fredrick Hystad, 63 of Le Mars, passed away following a courageous battle from Renal Cell Carcinoma on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

A Celebration of Dan's Life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be expressed to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.

Dan was born on April 21, 1962 in Minot, ND.  After several moves with his family, they settled in Jamestown, ND.  He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1980 and attended NDSU from which he graduated in 1984.  In January 1985, he began a 41 year career as an insurance adjuster. During his insurance career he worked for: National Farmers Union Insurance Company, Westfield Insurance, a short time at Acuity Insurance, and finished his career in Le Mars.  In 2001, he was hired as a Claims Manager with Le Mars Mutal Insurance Company which was acquired by Donegal Insurance Group where he concluded his career as an AVP of claims.

During his time with Westfield Insurance Companies, he met the love of his life Carol A. Vortherms.  They were married in 1991 in Wilmont, MN in the 3-day Halloween blizzard.  While working for Westfield they lived in Cedar Rapids, IA and then Mankato, MN.  While living in Mankato, they were blessed with their first child, Danielle Hystad in 1994.  They then moved to Sioux Falls, SD and were blessed with a son, Matthew Hystad in 1997.  They then made their final move to Le Mars, IA in December 2001 when he took his job with Le Mars Mutal Insurance Company.

Dan's greatest joy was spending time with his family. They enjoyed going to concerts, golfing, bowling, attending sporting events especially NDSU football games, and riding motorcycles together.  He was a long-time member of St John's Lutheran Church, Eagles Club of Le Mars, American Legion Riders of NW Iowa, ABATE of IA, SD, NE, ND and Motorcycle Riders Foundation.

Dan was awarded the United Way Volunteer of the Year award in January 2020.  He also participated in many PGR missions and was the VP of Independent Riders for Children and Charities for many years.

He is survived by his wife Carol; his two children: Danielle of Le Mars, IA and Matthew (fiancé, Nicole) of Harrisburg, SD; brother, David of Milbank, SD; mother-in-law, Ellen Vortherms of Worthington, MN; in-laws: Pat (Jim) Pospisil of Alexandria, MN, Dale (Dee Rae) Vortherms of Spirit Lake, IA, Julie (Mark) Weber of St Francis, MN, Ken (Tammy) Vortherms of Winfield, MO, Mark (Jane) Vortherms of Avon, MN, and Keith (Lisa) Vortherms of St. Louis Park, MN; 17 nieces and nephews; 14 great nieces & nephews; numerous cousins and other extended relatives.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Brian and Alvina Hystad; father-in-law, Sylvester Vortherms; cousins: Rick and Kim Letvin; and numerous aunts and uncles.
