Darrell Reiter, 84, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society of Le Mars.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 6, 2019 at All Saints Parish - St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Darrell George Reiter was born on February 22, 1935 to Lawrence and Margaret (Wanderscheid) Reiter in Le Mars, Iowa.  He was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and received First Communion at St. James Catholic Church, both in Le Mars.  He attended school at Remsen Union and after schooling began working on the family farm. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Iowa National Guard. He served for 8 years and was honorably discharged on July 6, 1961.  Darrell was united in marriage to Bernice Wiese on April 17, 1956 at St. James Catholic Church.

Darrell worked various jobs as an electrician and plumber. He also worked for a time managing a movie theatre and at an electric shop.  Darrell worked full time until he was in a car accident in 1969.  He spent the next several years in hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. He was never expected to recover or walk again, but over the years, he overcame many obstacles and exceeded all expectations of his recovery.  He was able to come home to his family where he kept very busy despite his injuries. He mowed lawns and did garden work. He enjoyed doing what he could to help others. He loved weaving rugs and latch hook rugs. He enjoyed riding his 'Cadillac' (his bicycle), gardening, fishing, and being outdoors. He also enjoyed playing board games and doing his 'bookwork' (word search puzzles).

Darrell is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bernice; children: Steve (Theresa) Reiter of Wichita, KS, Doug (Jill Foster) Reiter, Patty (Dale) Huisman, Randy (Julie) Reiter, and Mary Beth (Thomas) Nilles all of Le Mars; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; siblings: twin sister, Darlene (Harley) Engeldinger, Jerry (Nancy) Reiter, Richard (Nancy) Ernst, and Mary (Jerry) Shields; and sister in law, Joan Wiese; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents; parents in law, Roy and Marion Wiese; sister, Joyce Nuzum; step father, Raymond Ernst; and brothers in law; William Wiese and Raymond Wiese.
