David "Rocky" Bunjes, 73, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, at his home in Le Mars surrounded by his family.
A Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Father Douglas Klein will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Burial will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkefh.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Rocky's name to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in Sioux City, in care of the family.
David Walter Bunjes, the son of Walter and Dorothy (Feller) Bunjes, was born on September 23, 1950. He was raised in Le Mars where he attended school. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1968.
He enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a mechanic, working on helicopters. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Le Mars. He worked alongside his father in the family business, Bunjes Builders.
He was united in marriage to Susan Mullally on May 16, 1974, in Le Mars, Iowa. Rocky continued in the construction business until his retirement in 2022.
Rocky was a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. He enjoyed tinkering with and riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed fishing, reading, and writing. He loved listening to music, especially "The Beatles." Many of his Saturdays in the fall involved him watching college football. His family was his greatest joy, he loved spending time with them playing cards and board games.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Susan of Le Mars; his children: Dan (Rose) Bunjes of Le Mars, Matt Bunjes of Le Mars, and Beth Bunjes of Brunsville, IA; his daughter in law, Josie Bunjes of Le Mars; 2 grandchildren: Olivia and Beau; two sisters: Becky Keith and Tina Bunjes, both of Le Mars; and several in laws, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dorothy Bunjes; his father and mother-in-law, Mike Sr and Marie Mullally; and a son, Billy Bunjes.
