Delores Burkard , 88, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, Iowa. Reverend William McCarthy will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation with the family present will begin after the Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .
Delores Erna Ziebeck was born December 30, 1930 in Devils Lake, North Dakota, the daughter of Herman and Erna (Krumbein) Ziebeck. She grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota, where she attended school. She graduated from Moorhead High School. Following school, she worked at a bank in Moorhead and later a bank in Colorado Springs, CO.
She was united in marriage to Ronald Burkard January 30, 1954 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Following their marriage, the couple farmed their entire married lives in Elgin Township. In recent years, Delores and Ron found time to spend many years as volunteers for the Life Skills Training Center in Le Mars and they were great advocates and volunteers for the Plymouth County Museum. Ron passed away March 1, 2011.
Delores was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. Most recently, she had been attending All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars. She was very active in her church, having been a member of Christian Mothers, Guild, and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed traveling with Ron on his many bicycle trips. She and Ron also enjoyed square dancing. She was a foster grandma, known as "Grandma D", for many children at Gehlen Catholic School. She volunteered at the Country Store at the Plymouth County Fair for over 30 years. Delores also enjoyed reading, crafting, and gardening.
Survivors include her children: David (Shirley) Burkard of Brunsville, IA, Donna (Fred) Mills of St. Charles, MO, Lois Jackson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Daniel Burkard (Lynn Horensavitz) of East Haven, CT; her summertime daughter, Claudia (Mike) Koenig of Council Bluffs, IA; her grandchildren: Zachary Burkard, Michaela (Joshua) Krahling, Melissa (Bryan) Wright, Amy Ann (Mike) Schindhelm, Misty (Chris) Stayton, Rachel (Brandon) Higgens, Heather (Mitch) Kellar, Michael Koenig, and Matthew Koenig; 8 great grandchildren; her in laws: Abby Burkard of Le Mars, IA, and Chris (Gloria) Burkard of Kerrville, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Erna Ziebeck; her husband, Ronald Burkard; her sister and husband, Lorraine (Don) Peterson; her grandchildren: Troy and Angelina Burkard; her son in law: Doug Jackson; and her brother in law: Robert Burkard.
