Donald Allaway Jr, 72 of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2024, at his home in Akron surrounded by his family.

Memorial Service will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa with Pastor Susan Juilfs officiating. Visitation with the family present will begin at 4:00 p.m. and continue until the service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

Donald Dean Allaway Jr was born on August 26, 1951 in Sioux City, Iowa to Donald Sr. and Avis (Boni) Allaway. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1970. Don was united in marriage to Carol Carlson on September 5, 1970 and they made their home in Sioux City. Don then enlisted in the United States Air Force and they moved to Wichita, KS, Wichita Falls, TX, and Las Vegas, NV while Don trained and worked an electrical engineer. Don was then stationed in Korea before he was honorably discharged in 1974.

Don and Carol then moved to Corpus Christi, TX where Don worked in electrical on an oil rig. They moved back to Akron in 1986 with their three children: Donald Dean III, Andy and Sara. Don continued his work in electrical engineering with Micro Tower and later High Tech electrical in Sioux City. Don worked for a few years at Wells Blue Bunny before retiring in 2014.

Don enjoyed fishing on the Big Sioux River and the occasional trip to Canada. He had a vegetable garden that he enjoyed taking care of and canning its produce. He had a large knife collection and enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially Dale Ernhardt Sr. He loved working on and tinkering with any type of vehicle. He was THE best practical joker and he loved teasing and joking with his grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol; three children: Don (Tammy) Allaway of Le Mars, Iowa, Andy (special friend, Arielle Reichert) Allaway of Westfield, Iowa, and Sara (Kelly) Ver Hoeven of Hawarden, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Marissa (Michael) Nelson and their two children: Logan and Karlie, Donald 'Donny' Dean IV (Heather) Allaway, Justin Allaway, Dylan Ver Hoeven, Kaleb Ver Hoeven, Lilly Allaway, and Mia Allaway; sister, Jeanne Hurteua of Florida; nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Don is preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Jim Allaway and Debbie Phillips; brother in law, Butch; and nephew, Brian McCormick.
