Elaine Marie Nylund was born on March 24th, 1942 to Robert and Minnie Nylund. Settled outside of Alcester, South Dakota, Elaine grew up in a loving household with her two older sisters, Aileta and Kay. After graduating from Alcester High School in 1960, she resided on a farm outside of Alcester. She enjoyed her time as a homemaker and mother to her four children: Brian, Jane, Mark, and Andrea. Her children were her pride and joy.
On May 26, 1984, Elaine was united in marriage to Tom Swoyer. Together they built a wonderful life for over forty years where their children from previous marriages became family. Elaine and Tom provided a home where their children were raised with a strong foundation rooted in faith and love. As their children spread their wings, Elaine chose to spread her own when she decided to go back to school to pursue her nursing degree at the University of South Dakota. As a nurse, she thrived for many years helping and caring for others. She inspired her children and grandchildren to discover their passions, chase their dreams, and never stop growing.
Elaine was gentle, kind, and loving. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed their "Nature Grandma" who loved big, gave warm hugs, and took the extra time with each of them. She was a meticulous gardener and homemaker who took pride in her flowers, plants, canning, and baking. If you were lucky enough, she would share some of her homemade jam, pickles, or goodies. The family home was filled with warmth and a special collection of Swedish decor. She was very proud of the life she and Tom shared. In their free time, they enjoyed taking trips in their camper, traveling to watch their grandchildren in various activities, or being present at family milestone moments. Her journey was one marked by compassion for others and an unwavering faith in God.
Elaine is lovingly survived by her husband Tom of 40 years; children: Brian (Kara) Quall, Jane Buum, Mark (Jenny) Quall, and Andrea (Mark) Hoekstra; and Tom's children: Robin (Todd) Harty, Mark (Kathy) Swoyer, and Curt (Sheila) Swoyer; grandchildren: Brett (Kari) Quall, Courtney (Chase) Weber, Conner (Megan) Buum, Mike (Luxmi) Quall, and Madison and Molly Hoekstra; Andrew, Ashley, Cody (Samantha), and Celsey Pies, Allison (Randy) Johnson, Emily (Sean) Doremus, and Alexa, Allie, and Alivia Swoyer; great-grandchildren: Anders and Krew Quall, Claire, Charley, Harris, and Wells Weber, Natalie and Sean Buum, Bailey, Paxton, and Jessa Pies, and Oscar Johnson. Also left to cherish her memory are her sister, Kay; extended family members; and many special and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Aileta.
"Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." Proverbs 31:31
