Eugene 'Gene' Morfitt, 69 of Akron, Iowa and formerly of Lake Park, Iowa, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, following a brief illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.

Gene was born on January 14, 1951, to Harley and Eleanor (Crist). He was raised in Harris, Iowa and graduated from Harris Lake Park High School in 1969. Gene spent his young adult life farming and raising his sons, Darwin and Dustin, in Lake Park. Gene then changed directions and attended A&P school (airframe and powerplant) to pursue a career in aircraft maintenance in Clovis, California during the 90's.  Gene returned to Lake Park in 2000. On July 4 th , 2002, he met Kathleen 'Casey' (Brown) Smith. They married on July 4 th , 2003 in Lake Park. Gene and Casey made their home in Lake Park until 2016 when they moved to an acreage in rural Akron, Iowa.

Gene had many hobbies over the years and was always working on something. An amazing craftsman, he was very proud of his woodworking shop; he was always designing and building something. Gene enjoyed riding his motorcycle and collected guns and knifes. In retirement he became an avid movie buff and reader of fantasy novels. He also loved to spend time with his grandsons and with his dog, Roxie.

Gene is survived by his wife, Casey; children: Darwin (Emlina) Morfitt of Lake Park, Iowa, Dustin (Veronica) Morfitt of Grand Island, Nebraska, Staci Smith of Sioux City, Iowa, and Chad Smith of Sioux City, Iowa; grandsons: Jackson and Lance Moore; sister Becky Smith of Milford, Iowa; siblings-in-law, Sandy Brown, Jeff (Nan) Brown, and Lynn (Bruce) Cobb, and other extended family.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Eleanor, brother-in-law, Biff Brown, and parents in law, Buell and Cathy Brown.
