Gary Francis Ellensohn was born on March 25, 1958 in Le Mars, Iowa to Don and Shirley (Kunkel) Ellensohn. He attended and graduated from Gehlen Catholic in 1976. Gary started farming in 1979 and he also sold crop insurance with Rain & Hail.

Gary was united in marriage to Mary Reuter on June 7, 1980 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.

Gary was a long time member of All Saints-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars where he was also a member of Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the Le Mars Optimist Club, serving as president multiple times and the fair food stand manager. He also was a 4-H leader and coached for little league.

Gary was a proud dad and Papa: he instilled a strong work ethic in his children, and he loved to joke and prank his grandchildren. Gary enjoyed being organized and prepared, taking the lead and ensuring that all tasks: from planting, harvest, or the food booth at the fair, ran smoothly and successfully. He loved to visit with his insurance customers and could share a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed watching sports, always cheering on the Gehlen Jays, Iowa State Cyclones, Iowa Hawkeyes, and San Francisco 49ers.

He was a skilled laborer: Gary could do home repairs, including carpentry, drywall, flooring, electrical; vehicle repairs, and welding. He could and would fix just about anything.

Gary is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary; his mother, Shirley Ellensohn; his four children: Aaron (Jessica) Ellensohn of Ames, IA, Kyle (Katrina) Ellensohn of Des Moines, IA, Todd (Lori) Ellensohn of Le Mars, and Krista Ellensohn of Chicago, IL; grandchildren: Kreed Ellensohn, Hadley Ellensohn, Marcus Ellensohn, McKenna Ellensohn, Damien Ellensohn, Tristian Ellensohn, Briggs Ellensohn, Keane Riley, Brock Balik, Sienna Balik, and Savanna Balik; and other extended relatives.
