George Laughton, 89, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 26, 2024, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Pastor Jason Larson will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. George Lloyd Laughton, the son of Lloyd and Ethel (Moir) Laughton, was born on February 5, 1935, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars. He was raised on a farm north of Le Mars. He went to country school at Elgin #4 in rural Plymouth County, Iowa. Following his schooling, enlisted in the Army National Guard. While in the guard, he received his GED.

He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Millsap on March 19, 1961 at the Superior Methodist Church in Superior, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm north of Le Mars. George farmed and fed cattle.

He enjoyed listening to old time country music and watching the Grand Ole Opry. He also enjoyed reading farm magazines, watching RFD TV and sitcoms from the 70s and 80s. He would often go to coffee or dinner with good friends. George enjoyed welding and would make useful and fun things, including gates and metal sunflowers. George even made a cab for his tractor before they became popular. He bought the country schoolhouse he had attended and turned it into a combine shed. He had a great dry sense of humor and loved to joke with his friends and staff at Happy Siesta. He enjoyed being outdoors and watching everything that was going on.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Le Mars; his children: Janet Slieter of Luverne, MN, Kay (Ben) DeHart of Overland Park, KS, and David (Angie) Laughton of Le Mars; 6 grandchildren: Mike (Juliana) DeHart and their children, Tristan and Heath; Dr. Tom DeHart; Joe (Natalie) Slieter and their children, Asher and Luke; Josh (Katie) Slieter and their children, Dalan, Dietrich, and Desmond; Cody (Abbey) Laughton; and Jenna Laughton; 2 sisters: Joyce Willer of Le Mars, IA, and Lois Trusheim of Toledo, IA; a brother in law, Jerome (Faye) Millsap of Estherville, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, Paul and Mabel Millsap; his siblings: Mary Bangs, Helen (Chuck) Driggs, and Mildred (Perry) Springer; his in laws: Charles Willer, Ray Trusheim, Wallace Knerr, and Martha Millsap; his son in law, Dale Slieter; a niece, Deb Campbell; and a nephew, Brian Bangs.
