Gerald Hitzemann , 67, of Akron, Iowa passed away Friday, April 16, 2021 at Unity Point Health – St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery in Akron.  Reverend Carla Nelson from Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron, Iowa will officiate.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Gerald Lee Hitzemann was born July 31, 1953 in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Melvin and Eleanor (Vipond) Hitzemann.  He went to country school in Union County, South Dakota.  He went to high school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School.

Following high school, Gerald began his career as an over the road truck driver.  He started out as an owner operator and later drove for area trucking companies until retiring due to his health.  After retirement, he worked part time for Dirk's Motor Company in Akron.

Gerald had a love for CB radios.  He enjoyed visiting with truckers from all over the United States.  Even after his retirement, he still enjoyed driving around the area and visiting with the truck drivers that were passing through.  He could start up a conversation with anyone!  He had a passion for everything wolves and eagles and enjoyed collecting memorabilia with them on it.

Survivors include his daughter, Leanne Hitzemann of Kemp, TX; his mother, Eleanor Hitzemann of Akron, IA; his sister, Renee Benning of Plainfield, IA; and his nephew, Levi (Trista) Benning of Plainfield, IA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Hitzemann; his brother in law, Bill Benning; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
