Gladys Clarey , 89, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 22, 2020 at the Akron Care Center.

Private family Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. Father Paul Bormann will celebrate Mass with Deacon Richard Port assisting. Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2020 at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. The public is invited to attend the graveside service while practicing social distancing as mandated by state and federal guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A public viewing, with no family present, limited to 10 people at a time practicing social distancing, will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. Gladys Lucille McCorkell was born January 13, 1931 in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Clair and Mable (Pike) McCorkell. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School.

She was united in marriage to Cliff Clarey on October 27, 1949 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Gladys was a homemaker for her family. Early on, the couple farmed in South Dakota until moving to Southern California in 1957. After Cliff retired in 1988, they moved back to Akron to be closer to their family. Cliff passed away January 24, 2011. Gladys continued to make her home in Akron until moving to the Akron Care Center 3 ½ years ago.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Gladys enjoyed doing arts and crafts. She also enjoyed baking, cooking, and canning vegetables. Most of all, she loved the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her 6 children: Larry (Verna) Clarey of Akron, IA, Peggy (Bob) Wright of Medford, OR, Patty (Bob) McLain of Glendora, CA, Teresa Moring of Akron, IA, Dennis Clarey of Denver, CO, and Joe (Jennifer) Clarey of Akron, IA; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; her in laws: Darrell Wilson of Akron, IA, Lois Clarey of Akron, IA, Gerd Ludwigs of Akron, IA, and LaVonne Henry of Riverside, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clair and Mable McCorkell; her husband, Cliff Clarey; two siblings, Phyllis Wilson and Ed McCorkell; and several in laws.
