Helen Moffatt, 92, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 19, 2024, at Sunrise Senior Living in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Steve Jewett and Chaplain Richard Cogan will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa. Helen Comfort Engesmoe, the daughter of Carl and Hilda (Nordaune) Engesmoe, was born on March 26, 1931, in Hendricks, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm near Hendricks where she attended country school at District #42.  She attended high school in Hendricks and graduated from Hendricks High School in 1949.

Following high school, she went to work as a waitress in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During that time, she met a trucker named Harold Moffatt. They were united in marriage on September 9, 1950, in Hendricks, Minnesota. They farmed near Akron for many years. Helen was a homemaker for her family. They retired in September of 1990, and moved to Akron. Harold passed away on April 19, 2009. In 2017, Helen moved to the nursing home.

Helen was a founding member of New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron where she kept the attendance records for many years. She enjoyed baking and cooking. She loved to decorate cakes. She also enjoyed crocheting. Helen could play the accordion, piano, and organ all by ear. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her 4 children: Dianna (Mark) Ellerbroek of Ely, MN, Larry (Diane) Moffatt of Akron, IA, Karen (Ron) Joslin of Fordyce, NE, and Gary (Toshia) Moffatt of Hawarden, IA; 12 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; a brother, Joe Engesmoe of Hendricks, MN; a sister, Marcy Sommervold of Hendricks, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Hilda Engesmoe; her husband, Harold Moffatt; her siblings: Gelina (Orris) Olson, Hank (Ruth) Engesmoe, Cliff (Irene) Engesmoe, Opal (Chester) Benson, Pearl (Ron) Weenink, and 2 sisters in infancy; her in laws, Helen Engesmoe and Kenny Sommervold; and a great granddaughter, Brittany Joslin on September 16, 2004.
