Obituary

John Van Hill, 81, of Le Mars, Iowa, entered into the loving arms of Jesus surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2023 at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Burial will follow at Sherman Township Cemetery in rural Maurice, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended through the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Zestos Shepherd Closet in Alton, Iowa.

John Albert Van Hill was born on October 6, 1941 in Orange City, Iowa to Albert and Henrietta 'Hattie' (Kozak/Mulder) Van Hill. He attended Orange City Christian School, MOC-FV School and graduated from Unity Christian High School. John was united in marriage to Mary Zomermaand on December 4, 1964 in Orange City, Iowa. They moved to Le Mars in 2001. John worked as a truck driver for over 44 years before retiring. After their youngest daughter graduated high school, Mary and John trucked together for several years.  He was a member at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. He enjoyed watching Major League Baseball, especially the Twins, and NASCAR racing. John raced hobby stock cars for many years in Le Mars, Sioux Center, IA, Rock Rapids, IA, and Jackson, MN. He also enjoyed taking a cruise in his 2014 white Camaro. He loved traveling out West and going camping. John loved his wife, daughters, son in laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family, especially going camping and cheering them on at their games.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Van Hill; three daughters: Melissa (Larry) Netten of Orange City, IA, Susan Van Hill of Des Moines, IA, and Paula (Ted Sr) Madsen of Le Mars, IA; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren with one more on the way; son in law, Gene Hacker of Sioux City, IA; siblings: Alice Lund of Orange City, IA, Ann Van Hill of Orange City, IA, Esther (Jim) Bouwman of Rock Valley, IA, and Milly Chapman of Le Mars, IA; siblings in law: Garald (Karen) Zomermaand of Polk City, IA, Henry (Sharon) Zomermaand of Maurice, IA, Jan (Bob) Hughes of Struble, IA, Chuck (Elaine) Zomermaand of Struble, IA, and Bonnie (Ken) Hunter of Harris, IA; and many other extended relatives.

John is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sandra Hacker; his parents in law, Gerrit and Johanna (Niessink) Zomermaand; and brothers in law: Curtis Lund, Roger Lukken, and Marc Chapman.
