Obituary

Joseph F. 'Joe' Banks, 89, of Akron, Iowa, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Celebration of life for both Joe and his wife, Caryl, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Please feel free to dress casually. Memorials can be made in Joe's name to the Food Bank of Siouxland.

Joseph Francis Banks, the son of Orel 'Chuck' and Nona (DeRocher) Banks, was born on January 7, 1936, in Westfield, Iowa. He grew up in rural Plymouth County, Iowa. He attended Liberty High School and graduated in 1953.

He was united in marriage to Caryl Joan Davis on September 24, 1955, in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple lived in Sioux City for several years prior to relocating to rural Akron in the early 1960's. Joe worked for the United States Postal Service for over 39 years, initially in Sioux City and later in Akron. He also farmed in rural Plymouth County, Iowa.

He was active in local civic affairs, serving for a time on the Westfield Board of Education. He enjoyed golfing and was one of the original members of the Akron Golf Course. Joe and Caryl enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing. They owned several racehorses through the years.

Joe is survived by his wife, Caryl, of rural Akron; his children: Jeff (Linda) Banks of Hawarden, SD, Julie (Hugh) Zavadil of Topeka, KS, Jerry Banks of McCook Lake, SD, Jon Banks (and special friend Judy) of Akron, IA, Jodi (Dave) Basart of rural Akron, IA, and Jamie (Jodi) Banks of rural Akron, IA; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orel 'Chuck' and Nona Banks; and a step grandson, Tyler Dawdy.
