Joe was born on September 22, 1937 to John and Agnes McLaughlin Geary of LeMars, IA. As the youngest of 9 children in a Catholic family, he developed a deep faith, strong work ethic, and even stronger sense of humor from a very young age. Joe was an altar boy at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and attended Gehlen and Central before joining the military.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Joe worked for Blankenship Painting in Sioux City for 35+ years (alongside his big brother, Leo). He was a dedicated member and local chapter president of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. He enjoyed sharing stories about all the people and businesses he worked with over the years including the folks at Jolly Time Popcorn.
In 1966, Joe met his future bride while helping a friend and his sister jump start a car. He married that sister, Mary Margene Mullally, on April 1, 1967. No fooling. They raised 3 daughters in Hinton and were members of St. Michael's Parish in Leeds. Before his illness, Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed coin collecting and watching Minnesota Vikings football. In recent years, after giving up on a Vikings Super Bowl win, he enjoyed watching westerns and The Andy Griffith Show.
Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Margene; daughters and spouses: Marla Geary and Dave Vane (Minnetonka, MN), Susan Geary Simmons (Sioux City), Sheila and Matt Loutsch (Oyens); his beloved grandchildren; Joey Simmons, Maranda and David (Mariah) Vane, Marissa (Kevin), Matlynn, and Bella Loutsch; great-grandchildren, Khloe, Violet, Brinley, and Owen; sister: Aggie Thelen (Le Mars); sisters-in-law: Eileen Geary (Sioux City), Leone Geary (Marion); out-laws: Larry and Joellen Mullally (Storm Lake), Susie and Rocky Bunjes (Le Mars), Tommy and Patty Mullally (Le Mars), Karen and Mike Pommier (Winterset), JoAnn & Horn Singer (Le Mars), Margie Davis (LeMars), Malea and Kim Penne (Le Mars), Nancy Mullally (Le Mars), Dave Klave (Le Mars); and many ornery nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother in-law: Mike and Marie (Hames) Mullally; siblings: Vincent Geary, Rosemary (Bill) Leber, Bernard (Ruth, Nellie) Geary, Margaret (Lloyd) Grosenheider, Cecelia (Gene) Hutton, Richard (Bonnie) Geary, Jim Thelen, and Leo Geary; his out-laws: Mike and Judy Mullally, Ronnie Mullally, Laura Klave; his precious nieces: Rochelle Pecks, Vicki Youngberg, Kathy Geary, and Mariah Davis; a great grand nephew: Conner Weiland; and a great grand niece: Emily Geary.
