Obituary

Joyce Burcham, 88, of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa.  Reverend Eric Alm will officiate.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Akron.  Visitation with the family present will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church and following the service during a time of lunch and fellowship in the church hall.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.

Joyce Helen Sampson, the daughter of Kenneth and Ena Marie (Heech) Sampson, was born on April 1, 1935, in Akron, Iowa.  She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School.

She was united in marriage to Leland Burcham on July 11, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron.  They farmed near Westfield, Iowa.  In 1956, they moved to a farm near Richland, South Dakota.  In 1968, they moved to a farm near Elk Point, South Dakota.  They retired from farming in 1990.  In 1993, they moved into Elk Point.  Leland passed away January 27, 2010.

Joyce was active in the senior citizen organizations in Elk Point and North Sioux City.  She enjoyed crocheting and watching tennis on television. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing cards.  She loved the time spent with her family.

Survivors include her 3 children: Terry (Marilyn) Burcham of Burbank, SD, Rhonda (Tom) Begley of Greenwood, IN, and Rose Adams of Elk Point, SD; 9 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; two sisters: Marilyn Morehead of Merrill, IA, and Joy (John) Dirks of Akron, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Ena Marie Sampson; her husband, Leland Burcham; a son in law, Steve Adams; a sister, Virginia (Dan) Searls; and her in laws, Norman Morehead and Harold Jr (Mary) Burcham.
