Joyce Lorraine Hummel was born on September 28, 1928 to Albert and Opal (Bliss) Hummel. She grew up in Westfield, Iowa and graduated from Westfield High School. She then attended Rockford Women's College for one year before being united in marriage to Mac Thorson. They were married at Westfield United Congregational Church in August of 1947 and made their home in Akron. Joyce stayed home then worked at Thorson Drug. Mac passed away in 1988.
Joyce then found friendship and companionship with Harvey Lias. They enjoyed many years together before he passed away in 2005.
Joyce became a resident of the Akron Care Center in 2019. She loved her time there. Throughout her life, she always had many friends turned family and was a 'second mom' to many. This continued during her time at the Akron Care Center.
Joyce was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Friendship and Service Club, PEO, and volunteered for the Akron Community Theatre where she was the reservations lady. She also collected penguins and will be remembered affectionately as 'Pengiun Grandma'. Joyce was a HUGE Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Mac was an Iowa alumni, and they had football season tickets for many years to the football games. They also enjoyed other Iowa sports and attended many Bowl Games.
Joyce is survived by her five children: Marc (Gloria) Thorson of Akron, Melinda (Ken) Wickman of Webster Grove, MO, Martha Morin of Akron, Mason (Karen) Thorson of Rapid City, SD, and Mary Joyce (Ray) Newkirk of Riverside, IA; a 'Baker's Dozen' of grandchildren: Chris (John Davis) Thorson, Timothy Thorson, Carl Wickman, Jennie (Keith) Roed, Seth Morin, Callie (Aaron) Dankof, Nikki (Andrew) Curry, Keith (Haley) Thorson, Nate Thorson, Matthew Ferguson, Luke (special friend Molly) Ferguson, Sam Ferguson, and David (Kirsten) Ferguson; ten great grandchildren: Addi, Kenz, Harvey, Ames, Kalan, Ellis, Cece, Rogan, Ryan, and Edie; special nieces: Sue Ann Wilms and Marcia (Burt) Benna; and numerous loved ones who she considered family with simply too many to list - you all know who you are and what you meant to Joyce.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mac; son in law, Dave Morin; sister in law, Naomi (Chet) Mason; significant other, Harvey Lias; and long-time dear friend, Sibyl Campbell.
