Julie Ann Kunkel was born on September 1, 1961 in Le Mars, Iowa to David J. and DeAnn M. (Sitzmann) Kunkel. She was raised on their family farm in Neptune, rural Hinton, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1979. She continued her education at WIT Community College in Sioux City with a degree in nursing.
Julie was united in marriage to Glenn Rolling on October 29, 1983 and they made their home on a farm in Neptune, rural Hinton, Iowa. To this union, they had three children: Adam, Nicole, and Daniel. They moved off the farm and into Le Mars in 2012.
Julie was a caregiver at heart; her love was shown through her actions and devotion to those in her life. Professionally, she showed the same compassion and care at work. Julie worked as a team leader for 35 years with the members of the Pride Group in Le Mars. She also worked for a few years with residents at Brentwood (Good Samaritan Society) and the Abbey Nursing Home in Le Mars.
Julie was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church – Neptune in rural Hinton. After the church closed, she and Glenn became members at All Saints Parish – St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Julie's faith was so important to her and she sought to grow her faith through the intercession of Mary. She installed a strong faith by example into her family and children.
Julie enjoyed spending time with her children and being a camp counselor at Camp CAYOCA. They did some other camping while their children were young. Julie will be remembered as a wonderful cook and baker, often making her best recipes from her heart and not a recipe. She loved to garden, tending to her flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels who would visit. She also never wanted to miss her BUNCO nights with her friends.
Julie loved her family and especially treasured the time she spent with her two grandchildren, Anna and Ryan. Julie and Glenn loved to travel; they made many trips across the continental US, Canada, and some very memorable trips to Cancun. She loved to read and work on crossword puzzles. She enjoyed browsing and shopping at antique stores and swap meets. Julie also volunteered at the Copper Coin Thrift Shop in Le Mars.
Julie is survived by her husband of 42 years, Glenn; children: Adam (Cassi Lochner) Rolling of Hinton, IA, Nicole (Nathan) Hunt of Sergeant Bluff, IA, and Daniel Rolling of Kingsley, IA; two grandchildren: Anna Hunt and Ryan Hunt; mother, DeAnn Kunkel; siblings: Joe Kunkel, Christi Klossner, Curt (Kristi) Kunkel, Mark Kunkel, and Dave 'DJ' Kunkel Jr.; siblings in law: Marilyn (Marvin) Maly, Marie Benedix, Russ (Pam) Rolling, Jim Rolling, Kirk Rolling, Lyle (Deb) Schuetz, and Mark Sudtelgte; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
