Kervyn Heeren, 93, of rural Akron, South Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral service will be at 5:00p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron.  Pastor Neil Peck will officiate.  Military honors will be provided by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Burial will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials can be made to the Akron Care Center or to a favorite charity of your choice.

Kervyn Llewellyn Heeren, son of Wesley and Marie (Hultgren) Heeren, was born on September 12, 1931, in Union County, South Dakota.  He attended Garland Country School in Union County. Following his schooling, he began farming with his father.

He was united in marriage to Joanne Audrey Stoel on June 8, 1952, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Later that year, Kervyn was drafted into the United States Army.  He completed basic training in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, was then stationed in Baumholder, Germany during the Korean Conflict.  In July of 1954, he was honorably discharged, returned to Union County, South Dakota, where he and Joanne began farming.

Kervyn was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron.  He was also a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron and a member of the Skoon Skinner Club.  He served on the Hoyt School District Board for several years.  Kervyn enjoyed playing  cards, especially pinochle and cribbage.  He was an active person who enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening and fishing.  He also enjoyed making his famous home-made ice cream for family, friends and neighbors. His greatest joy though was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He and Joanne enjoyed attending many of their activities and events. Kervyn and Joanne shared a love of dogs.  After Joanne passed in 2022, Kervyn enjoyed time with their beloved companion, their dog, Heidi.

Survivors include his two sons: Greg (Lori) Heeren; Dave (Kerry Jo) Heeren, both of rural Akron, SD; 4 granddaughters, 7 great grandchildren: Tricia (Heath Dumas) Heeren, and their children, Wyatt and Layne; Angela (Josh) Rembe, and their children, Aiden and Ethan; Crystal Moeller, and her children, Aubri, Braxton, and Everett; and Desiree Heeren (fiancé, Tommy Holme); sisters-in-laws, Evonne DeVinny of Rochester, MN, and Marilyn Heeren of Vermillion, SD; several nieces, nephews, other relatives; and special family friends, Ned and Deb Hauser of Akron, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Marie Heeren; parents-in-law, Paul and Mildred Stoel; his wife, Joanne Heeren; an infant son, Jeffrey Kervyn Heeren; his brothers, Ray (June) Heeren, Verne Heeren; and a nephew, Steve Heeren.
