Kevin Michael Pitts was born on March 16, 1958 in Oakland, California to Merle and Frankie (Morris) Pitts. Kevin's father was in the Navy and after his discharge, he worked in air traffic as a controller so their family traveled across the United States during Kevin's childhood.
Kevin enlisted in the United States Navy on August 8, 1977 in Fairfax, Virginia. Kevin was stationed in Virginia, Washington DC, and San Fransico while stateside. During his service, Kevin visited ports around the world, including Australia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, a place he especially enjoyed. During his time in the service, Kevin was trained as a craftsman learning welding, mechanical repair and fire safety. He was honorably discharged on July 25, 1979.
Kevin ended up attending Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City. He spent time living in Colorado, New York and Minneapolis before making his home in Iowa. Kevin had a strong work ethic, and his work history was influenced by the skills he learned during his military service. He primarily worked in construction and welding but due to his health, ended up transitioning into restaurant management.
Kevin was a volunteer firefighter during his time in the Navy and while he lived in New York. In his younger years, he enjoyed bow hunting, camping, and spending time outdoors. He loved watching Ancient Aliens on the history channel and listening to the Beatles.
Kevin had a love for animals, especially the many beloved cats he had over the years. His love for cats began with his first cat named Gracie, and he is survived by his last feline companion, also named Gracie.
Kevin enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, especially his daughters and grandchildren. He always shared that his girls were the best thing to ever happen to him and they blessed him with the greatest legacy, his grandchildren.
Kevin is survived by his two daughters: Katherine 'Katie' (Tyler) Spoon of Tekamah, Nebraska and Tori (Brad) Meyer of Le Mars, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Brian (fiancée, CJ) Spoon, Isaiah Spoon, Kelly Spoon, Raelynn Meyer, Nikolai Spoon, Patrick Spoon, Timothy Spoon, Roland Meyer, and Cian Meyer; sister, Robyn (David) Stevenson; nephews: Jeremiah Halley, Jonathon Halley, Phillip Pitts, and Larry Pitts; close friends: Justin Marie and Rebecca Anderson; and other extended relatives.
Kevin is preceded in death by his father, Merle Pitts; mother, Wilma 'Frankie' Pitts; step-mother, Jerrilyn Pitts; infant daughter, Kelly Ann Pitts; brother, Larry Pitts; nephew, Kenneth Halley; and brother in law, Rob Halley.
