Larry Gene Oltmanns was born November 19, 1932 in Le Mars, IA, the son of Henry and Anna (Ommen) Oltmanns. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig. He attended country school in Plymouth County, Iowa. Following his schooling, he helped his father on the farm. Years later, Larry received his G.E.D. from Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, Iowa.

He enlisted in the United States Army on June 15, 1953. He was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1955.

He was united in marriage to LaDonna Klave on April 10, 1956 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig. Early on, they made their home on a farm between Ireton, IA and Craig where he farmed and worked for Eilers Farm Service in Ireton, Craig, and Struble. After living on the farm, they moved into Craig where they spent much of their married life. Larry retired from Eilers Farm Service after 35 years of service. His "after retirement job" was working for the Ireton CoOp. He was fortunate to have two jobs that he loved. In 2018, Larry and LaDonna moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars.

Larry was lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig where he was active for many years. He was also a member of the Heeren-McHale-Wilkens American Legion Post 724 of Brunsville.
