Obituary

LaVerne Feller , 83, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at his daughter's home in Basehor, Kansas, surrounded by his family.

Private family services will be held at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Father Bruce Lawler will officiate.  Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery – Neptune, rural Hinton, Iowa with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars.  The public is invited to attend the graveside service while practicing social distancing as mandated by state and federal guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  A public visitation with social distancing will be from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2020 at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Memorials can be made in LaVerne's name to Hospice of Siouxland or the Parkinson's Foundation.

LaVerne was born August 15, 1936 on a farm near Oyens in Fredonia Township to John & Justine (Orban) Feller.  LaVerne was baptized and confirmed at St Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, IA.  He attended Fredonia #5 country school and later graduated from Remsen St Mary's Catholic School in 1955.

After graduation he enlisted in the Iowa National Guard, (Company "K"- 133 rd Infantry).  LaVerne was united in marriage to Sally Phelan on June 16, 1959 at St. James Catholic Church.  They were blessed with three children.  On July 20, 1985 LaVerne married Darlene (Smith) Ruhland and they made their home near Brunsville.  The couple farmed for 35 years before retiring and moving to town in 2015.  Prior to farming LaVerne did other jobs including Plymouth Plumbing and Heating and Bernie Klein Implement.

LaVerne was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus as well as the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Wasmer Post #241.  He served many years at St James Catholic Church as usher and volunteered with Bingo.  LaVerne enjoyed traveling with Darlene over the years but loved getting together with family most of all.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Michael Feller and his wife Lori of Le Mars; a daughter and son-in-law Michelle Mortensen and husband Marland of Basehor, KS; a son and daughter-in-law Jonathan Feller and his wife Andrea of Longview, WA.  12 Grandchildren; John Feller, Melissa Moir, Megan Giese, Allison, Celena and Marriah Feller.  Matthew Mortensen, Joshua Mortensen, Michaela Heath.  Brittany Brett, Nicole Paul and Brad Orr.  15 Great grandchildren.  One brother Marvin (Darlene) Feller of Shenandoah, IA. Niece: Kris (Eric) Gibbs of Fremont, NE, Nephews: Mark (Cori) Feller of Shenandoah, IA, Jeff Feller of Des Moines, IA and Brad (Beth) Feller of Chicago, IL.  He also had five step children, Blue (Rebecca) Ruhland Gulf Shores, AL, Norbert (Pat) Ruhland McCook Lake, SD, Jeannine (Arnold) Keunen Le Mars, Annette (Gayle) Sitzmann Rural Le Mars, JoAnn (Leo) Langel of Le Mars and several step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene Feller: his parents, John and Justine Feller.
