LaVonne Foltz Spielman , 95, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Mission, Texas and Kimball, South Dakota, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2022 at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City.

Private family graveside services will be held at the Kimball Community Cemetery in Kimball, South Dakota.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

LaVonne Estellene Dey was born December 30, 1926 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the daughter of Ivan and Daisy (Patterson) Dey.  She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimball, South Dakota.

She attended country school near Kimball and later high school in Kimball.  She graduated from Kimball High School in 1945.  She attended Western Union School in Omaha, Nebraska for a year before transferring to Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Following her college, she taught country school in Brule County, South Dakota.

She was united in marriage to Lyle Foltz on May 27, 1948 in Mitchell, South Dakota.  She taught country school for one more year before staying home to help raise their children.  Lyle passed away on October 30, 1973.

In 1974, she moved to Mitchell, South Dakota where she was the front desk manager for the Holiday Inn in Mitchell.  She was the manager for 15 years, retiring in 1989.

Following her retirement, she enjoyed spending her winters in Mission, Texas.  While in Mission, she met Emil Spielman.  They were married on May 6, 1991 in Mitchell.  After their marriage, they spent their winters in Texas and their summers in Hoyt Lake, Minnesota.  Emil passed away on March 1, 2011.  Following Emil's passing, she made Mission, Texas her permanent home.  In 2018, she moved back to Northwest Iowa to be closer to her family.  She became a resident of the Whispering Creek Retirement Community in Sioux City.

LaVonne enjoyed flowers and plants, especially her roses.  She also enjoyed walking and doing craft work.

Survivors include her 3 children: Bob Foltz of Akron, IA, Deborah (Steve) Obermann of Owensboro, KY, and Stan (Jana) Foltz of Elk Point, SD; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 6 step children: Dan (Carol) Spielman, Larry (Donna) Spielman, Joan Spielman, Patti Spielman,  Brian (Lori) Spielman, and Marie (Brad) Hudson; numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren; 2 sisters: DeVota Thorn of Rapid City, SD and Grace Cummins of Arnolds Park, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Lyle Foltz and Emil Spielman; her sister, Norma Jean Dey; and two brothers in law, Andy Thorn and Gerald Cummins.
