Lawrence "Duane" Coon , 87, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Akron, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 1, 2021 at his home in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church – Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.  Military honors will be provided by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron.  Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Lawrence Duane Coon was born January 15, 1934 in Anthon, Iowa, the son of Arthur Sr and Verna (Dicus) Coon.  He attended school in Lawton, Iowa and graduated from Lawton High School.  At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  He was a radio operator for the Air Force while stationed in Japan for 2 years during the Korean War.  After returning to the states, he was stationed in Texas at Lackland Air Force Base until his honorable discharge.  Following his discharge, he returned to Siouxland.

He was united in marriage to Edith "Edie" Zeitler on June 2, 1957 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds.  Duane worked in Sioux City for a few years before beginning his career as a truck driver.  He began as an over the road driver for Midwest Continental and later for Crete Carriers.  Later, he was an owner operator for several years until he decided he wanted to stay closer to home.  He then went to work for Well's Dairy in Le Mars as a shag truck driver and later for Oetken Trucking, where he hauled grain.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church – Preston Township.  He was also a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron.  He enjoyed watching NASCAR and cheering on his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhardt Sr and Dale Earnhardt Jr.  He also enjoyed sitting in his easy chair and watching Western movies.  He and Edie enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, visiting family and sightseeing.

Survivors include his wife, Edie of Le Mars, IA; 4 children: Patty (Kevin) Hoover of Lakin, KS, Brian (Crystal) Coon of Akron, IA, Norman Coon of Twin Falls, ID, and Traci (Dave) Markowsky of Sioux City, IA; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister in law, Eunice Zeitler of Sioux City, IA; a special nephew and his wife, Randy and Glena Coon; several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother in law: Ray and Esther Zeitler; his siblings: Arthur Coon Jr, Frank Coon, and Willis Coon; and a son in infancy, Kevin Duane Coon.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Croix Hospice and Dr. Cindie Wolff for the care and comfort they provided for Duane.
