Obituary

Leland Harris, 85, of Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2021 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron.  Pastor Suzi Larson will officiate.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron.  Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron.  Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Leland Harris was born June 21, 1936 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Orin and Louise "Birdie" (Bennett) Harris.  He attended country school near Akron and later high school in Akron.  He graduated from Akron High School in 1954.

He enlisted in the United States Army National Guard on May 17, 1958 and he served until his honorable discharge on November 2, 1961.

He was united in marriage to Janice (Jan) Edwardson on May 10, 1963 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.  To this union, 4 children were born: Curt, Craig, Cindy and Crista.  They later divorced.

Following high school, Lee began farming north of Akron.  He also drove truck for Don Caskey and Bud Lias.  He made his home on the farm north of Akron until 1988, when he moved to Akron.  He continued farming until retiring in 2016.  Lee also drove bus for Arrow Stagelines in Sioux City.  He enjoyed taking the Morningside College softball team on their out-of-town trips.  He also drove bus for Akron-Westfield School for many years.

Lee was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron.  Over the years, he served on various ag groups and committees.  He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at Barwick Ag in Akron and enjoyed having a "tractor tire donut" from Casey's.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He loved watching them participate in all of their activities.

Survivors include 4 children and their mother: Curt (Jackie) Harris of Akron, IA, Craig (Lisa) Harris of Morehead, IA, Cindy (Randy) Koopmans of Ireton, IA, Crista (Dana) Meinen of Akron, and Jan Harris of Akron, IA; 15 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; 2 brothers: Reese (Linda) Harris of Cedar Falls, IA, and Orin (Jan) Harris of Forest City, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orin and Louise Harris; and 4 siblings: Morton Harris, Lois Jean Dawson, Stuart "Skip" Harris, and Ruth Esbeck.
