Lois Jean Matilda Frerichs was born on January 10, 1931 on the family farm in rural Plymouth County, Iowa to George and Elnora (Schmitt) Frerichs. She attended country school and graduated from Akron High School in 1945. After graduation she worked as a secretary at Gasmans in Akron and for Peck Manufacturing in Le Mars. Lois was united in marriage to Varold Voss on August 22, 1951 at St. John's Lutheran Church – Preston Township. Varold and Lois lived in Fort Knox, Kentucky while Varold was stationed there. After Varold's honorable discharge, they moved back to rural Akron, Iowa onto Varold's family farm. Varold and Lois farmed together for 50 years; they milked cows in their early years but they also raised cattle, hogs, and crops. They retired and moved into Akron in 2001.

When they weren't farming, you could find Lois and Varold dancing. They spent many Friday and Saturday nights dancing with friends at many dance floors around Northwest Iowa. They also enjoyed their early fishing trip to Canada and playing in a card club. Lois loved to sew, bake, and make her famous pickled herring.

Lois was a lifelong member at St. John's Lutheran Church – Preston Township where she was a member of the ladies' circle, funeral committee, and quilting group. Lois also enjoyed preparing food for Memorial Day events at the Brunsville Legion.

Lois' favorite time was spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She made sure to have all their favorite foods and drinks available in case they stopped by. They also had a favorite tradition of making popcorn balls together for Halloween treats.
