Obituary

Lorraine Durr, 102, of Merrill, Iowa, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022, at her home in Merrill surrounded by her family.  She was Merrill's oldest resident.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars.  Visitation with the family present will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Lorraine Margaret Thoms, the daughter of Homer and Emma (Frisch) Thoms, was born June 1, 1920, in rural Plymouth County, Iowa.  She attended country school in Plymouth County before attending Merrill Public School where she graduated in 1938.  Following high school, she went to work for Swift Packing Company in Sioux City.

She was united in marriage to Carl Durr Sr. in South Sioux City, Nebraska.  They made their home in Sioux City for a short time before moving to Merrill in 1950.  She was a homemaker for her family.  Carl passed away February 21, 1976.

Lorraine's favorite moments were spending time with her family.  She loved taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Being outdoors was also an enjoyment for her.  She could often be found reading the newspaper or working the daily crossword puzzle.  In her earlier years, she enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk show.  She also enjoyed canning the garden produce that her husband grew every year.

Survivors include her children and their families: Diane (Wayne) Anstine of Le Mars, IA, and their children: Jason (Kelli) Anstine, Nikki (Nick) Hoss, and Matt (Kat) Anstine; Fran Durr, in memoriam, and her son: Seth Durr; Carl (Donna) Durr Jr. of Le Mars, IA, and their children: Zack (Maria) Durr, Erica (John) Stoll, and Tate Durr; Jeanette Durr of Merrill, IA; Marlene Clarey of Dakota Dunes, SD, and her children: Julie (Quentin) Banks, Rachael Ostermyer (Scott Farmer), Johnny Clarey, and Michelle (Aaron)  Rife; Delores Lancaster (Steve Arens) of Le Mars, IA, and her children: Jake (Annie) Lancaster and Joe (Alex) Lancaster; 27 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer (1990) and Emma Thoms (1978); her husband, Carl Durr Sr.; her daughter, Fran Durr (1999); her sister and brother in law, Eunice and Ernie Schmid; her in laws, Orville and Colleen Durr, Lloyd and Irene (Durr) Nanninga, Emil and Ellen (Durr) Schoenrock, Earl and Alice (Durr) Madsen, and Leo and Jean (Durr) Corley; and a great great grandson, Nash Clarey.
