Obituary

Madonna Thelen, 90 of Granville, Iowa, passed away on May 3, 2021.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 10, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, Iowa with Reverend Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church on Monday.

Madonna Charlotte Thelen was born on March 31, 1931 to John and Appleonia (Oswald) Thelen. She was baptized on April 5, 1931 and confirmed on October 10, 1941 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Granville in 1948. Madonna moved to Iowa City to live with her sister, Elizabeth, after graduation. She worked for the hospital and a bakery in Iowa City. In the 1980's she moved back to Granville to help take care of her father. Madonna then worked at the Post Office in Granville from 1982 until she retired in 2017. Madonna was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. She also volunteered for Spalding Catholic Schools for many years; helping with many activities that benefited the school including newsletters and the annual Phone-a-thon.

Madonna is survived by her sister, Betty Warren of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her sister in law, Aggie Thelen of Le Mars; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Madonna is preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Marvin, Erwin and his wife, Julius and his wife, and James Thelen; brother in law, Ray Warren; nieces: Rochelle Pecks and Nancy Cohlewinski; nephews: Julius Thelen II and Thomas Thelen.
