Malcolm Whitfield Brodie, age 94, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.

Celebration of life services will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa, where the family will be present to receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment with military honors provided by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron will be held at the Plymouth Presbyterian Cemetery in rural Plymouth County. In lieu of flowers, a general memorial has been established. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home of Washington is in charge of arrangements in Washington. Malcolm was born June 29, 1929, in LeMars, Iowa, the son of Robert Benjamin and Myrna Odessa (Richey) Brodie. He attended school in LeMars for one year before his family moved to the farm in 1934. He then attended May Country School until eighth grade, and he graduated from Akron High School. Malcolm served honorably in the United States Army from 1949 until 1952. He was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Toner on July 4, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa. While in the service, Malcom and Beverly lived in Vine Grove, Kentucky, and Fairbanks, Alaska, before returning to Iowa. They moved to Washington, Iowa, in October of 2020.

Malcolm farmed all of his life in Plymouth County and was known as a good steward of the land and he took great pride in his livestock. He owned and operated Brodie Equipment Inc. in Akron, Iowa, for several years.

After his discharge from the service, he purchased a boat and three-day weekend boating trips eventually led to three-month trips. He and Bev traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, Great Britian, and Canada where they purchased a home and spent summer months fishing on Lake of the Woods. He soon became "Mr. Fix It" for friends at Lake of the Woods and had a great fondness for the many uses of Gorilla Glue. For 30 years, it was put the crops in, go to Canada for five months, return to harvest the crops and then winter in the Canyon Lake and South Padre area of Texas. In his earlier years Malcolm enjoyed dancing. He enjoyed his daily JD and 7 cocktail, was a great storyteller and had a great sense of humor.  He was an avid reader and never met a pie he did not like. He was very proud of the Brodie Scottish Heritage and enjoyed teaching his three daughters all aspects of farming.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Brodie of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Kathlyn Jones of Big Arm, Montana; daughter, Karen Andrew of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Kim (Kelley Marcantel) Brodie of Boerne, Texas; six grandchildren: Rebecca Walseth, Jon Saienga, Emilee Jones, Ellyn Hildebrand, Robert Andrew, and Zach Marcantel; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Bruce Brodie and sister-in-law, Phyllis Brodie; grandson, Colton Marcantel; as well as two sons-in-law, Frank Jones and Michael Andrew.
