Marvin Toben, 78, of rural Westfield, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home, 601 Torbert Blvd, in Akron, Iowa. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Military honors will be provided by Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. Marvin Kenneth Toben was born in Akron, IA on August 11, 1942, the youngest child of Carl and Agnes (Welch) Toben. Marvin attended Toben Country School near Westfield, IA and graduated from Westfield Community High School in 1960. After graduation Marvin began farming with his father and in the winter months he worked as a welder in Sioux City, IA. In April of 1964, he was drafted into the United States Army and was sent to Fort Polk, LA for basic training. After basic, he was stationed in Fort Knox, KY in the 7 ^th Field Hospital as a clerk-typist. In October of 1965, his unit received orders to move out. It was a secret move until the end of November. They stopped in California, Hawaii, and on Thanksgiving Day while in Wake Island they were told they were going to a Japanese Air Force Base to set up a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital). Marvin served there until his honorable discharge in January of 1966. He remained in the Army Reserves until April of 1970.

Marvin was united in marriage to Alyce Carole Swanson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron on November 27, 1964. They lived in Radcliff, KY during their first year of marriage until Marvin was stationed in Japan. They later made their home in rural Westfield. Marvin worked as a rural mail carrier for USPS for 30 years while he also farmed full time for 48 years.

Marvin was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. He was also a member of Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron, the Rural Letter Carrier Association, and the NRA. In his younger days, Marvin enjoyed playing music with his family and played the banjo. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Marvin is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Alyce Toben; children: Laura Marie (Matthew) Philips of Warrensburg, Illinois, Russell  Kenneth (Joyce) Toben of Westfield, Iowa, and Joseph Karl (Laura) Toben of Westfield, Iowa; grandchildren: Alex Matthew Philips, Alyssa Marie Philips and her children: Isaac Matthew Medler and Coralin Marie Medler, Grant William Philips, Krystal Eileen (Jacob) Biehle and their daughter Kassidy Alyce Biehle, Thomas Tyler Toben, Matthew Joseph Toben, Scott Michael Toben, and Natalie Jo Toben; sibilngs: Gene (Connie) Toben of Le Mars, IA, Joan (Loren) Hansen of Pierson, IA, and Dr. Carl (Janet) Toben of Ida Grove, IA; siblings in law: Kenneth (Betty) Swanson of Le Mars, IA, Keith (Janice) Swanson of Akron, IA, and Lynn Swanson of Des Moines, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Marvin is preceded in death by his parents; parents in law, Roland and Esther (Sand) Swanson; brother, John Toben Jr.; sister, Mary (Lyle) Wegner; and granddaughter, Rachael Rose Toben.
