Obituary

Mike Gengler, 84, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 12, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars.  Father Douglas Klein will celebrate Mass.  Father Bruce Lawler will concelebrate.  Burial with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will be at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.  Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  The family will be present from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  There will be Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at St. James Catholic Church.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.

Michael George Gengler, the son of John "Jack" and Florence (Doyle) Gengler, was born on November 30, 1938, in Le Mars, Iowa.  He attended school at St. Joseph Catholic School in Le Mars.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on July 17, 1956.  He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.  He was honorably discharged on July 16, 1959.  Following his discharge, he returned to Le Mars and completed his schooling.

He was united in marriage to Marlene Gotto on September 24, 1960, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Struble, Iowa.

Mike spent most of his life working as an auto body technician.  He owned and operated Le Mars Body Shop for over 50 years, working many of those years with his sons, Paul and Richard.

Mike was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars.  He was also a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 in Le Mars.  He also was a Boy Scout leader for many years.  Mike enjoyed coaching his children in baseball and softball, while they were in Little League.  Over the years, he enjoyed camping, fishing, and having coffee with his friends.  He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers.  His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren.  He loved watching them participate in all their activities and events.

Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Marlene of Le Mars; a son, Richard (AnnaBelle) Gengler of Le Mars, IA; a daughter, Teresa (Scott) Held of Hinton, IA; a daughter, Lisa (Steve) Schnepf of Le Mars, IA; a daughter in law, Denise Gengler of Le Mars; his grandchildren: Sarah Gengler (Shahryar Naqvi), Erica Gengler, Austin Gengler, Zachary Gengler, Jacob (Brittany) Gengler, Adam (Dawn) Stanley, Justin (Amanda) Held, Jamie Held, Alison (Colby) Snyder, Mackenzie Schnepf, and Rylee Schnepf; 10 great grandchildren; his brother, Bill Gengler of Le Mars; his in laws: Wayne Rassel of Le Mars, Karen Hagar of Le Mars, JoEllen Mullally of Storm Lake, IA, Patty (Tom) Mullally of Le Mars, and Vicki (Jeff) Lamp of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Florence Gengler; his father and mother-in-law, Ben and Loretta Gotto; his son, Paul Gengler; a granddaughter in infancy, Elsa Gengler; a grandson, Michael Gengler; his sister, Margaret Rassel; a brother, Jack (Shirley) Gengler; and his in laws, Patsy Gengler, Donna (Charles) Hoffman, Linda Hemmelrick, and Lawrence "Buzz" Gotto.
