Obituary

Peter Nilles , 87, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society of Le Mars.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars.  Father Douglas Klein will celebrate Mass.  Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa.  Visitation with the family present will begin after the Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars.  There will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Peter Adam Nilles, the son of Peter and Olga (Krieps) Nilles, was born on March 1, 1935 on a farm near Remsen, Iowa.  He attended school in Remsen and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1953.  Following high school, he worked in Remsen for a few years.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1956.  He served his country for two years before his honorable discharge in 1958.  After his discharge from the service, he returned to Remsen and continued working for several businesses, including the Farmer's Coop.

He was united in marriage to Judith Ryan on June 11, 1962, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elk Point, South Dakota.  The couple lived in Marcus and Remsen before moving to their family farm South of Le Mars in 1968.  Peter farmed for many years until his retirement.

Peter and Judy were longtime members of Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill and then became members of All Saints Catholic Parish.  He sang in the church choir at Assumption in Merrill until it closed in 2015.  He volunteered at the Carmelite Monastery in Sioux City with his brothers, Dennis, Stan, and Lorne.  He served on the Plymouth Coop board in Le Mars for many years.  He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Peter enjoyed working in his workshop, making wayside shrines and metal windchimes.  He loved farming and tending to his garden.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Judy of Le Mars; 5 children: Paul (Kari) Nilles of Waukee, IA, John (Linda) Nilles of Le Mars, IA, Robert (Kathy) Nilles of Omaha, NE, Thomas (Mary) Nilles of Le Mars, IA, and Lee (Angela) Nilles of Le Mars, IA; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Dennis (Bev) Nilles and Mark (Jean) Nilles, all of Le Mars, IA; his in laws: Shirley Nilles of Kingsley, IA, Julie Nilles of Madison, SD, and Joel (Nancy) Ryan of Elk Point, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Olga Nilles; his father and mother-in-law, Jerry and June Ryan; his siblings: Lorne (Florence) Nilles, George (Phyllis) Nilles, Stan Nilles, Anthony Nilles, Betty Nilles, Ruth (Gerry) Grage, Marcella (Norbert) Hansen, Clarice (Donald) Bainbridge, and in laws: Jerry John (Betty) Ryan.

Memorials can be made in Peter's name to the Carmelite Monastery in Sioux City or to a favorite charity of your choice.
