He was raised on the Jensen century family farm in rural Merrill, Iowa.  Rick was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Johnson Township, where he was a lifelong member. He attended elementary school at Kissinger School in Merrill and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1989. During high school, Rick began working at Ideal Cleaners in Le Mars for Walt and Numila Kern. He continued working for them for several years after he graduated.
