Obituary

Ruth Borchers , 108, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 15, 2021 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2021 at the Le Mars Bible Church in Le Mars.  Pastor Fred Gums will officiate.  Burial will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery – Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa.  Visitation with the family present will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday, October 22, 2021 at the Le Mars Bible Church.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.  Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Ruth Hortress Pennington was born October 21, 1912 in a farmhouse nestled among the Loess Hills in Monona County, Iowa, the daughter of C. Bruce and Myrtle (Phillips) Pennington.  She went to country school and later to Castana Consolidated School where she graduated in 1929.  She taught country school and junior high school at Castana.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Borchers on June 13, 1951 in Omaha, Nebraska.  The couple farmed and raised cattle and hogs in Plymouth County until Edwin's death in 1979.  She also taught country school in Plymouth County and went to night school at Westmar College in Le Mars and graduated in 1968.  She then taught at Le Mars Community School until her retirement in 1978.  After Edwin's passing, she moved to Le Mars in 1980.

She was united in marriage to William Varenhorst on October 2, 1988.  He passed away in 2000.  Ruth continued to make her home in Le Mars, most recently she was residing at the Floyd Valley Apartments.

Ruth was a member of the Le Mars Bible Church.  She and Edwin enjoyed dancing.  There favorite band was the Eddie Skeets Band.  They were able to join them on their tour to Switzerland and Germany.  She enjoyed doing China painting and made Christmas ornaments for her family.  When she turned 100, she was awarded with the Centenarian Certificate by the Governor of Iowa.  She also enjoyed playing cards at the Le Mars Senior Center.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, Raymond Borchers; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and close friend and senior companion, Sharon Collier.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Edwin Borchers and William Varenhorst; and her siblings and in laws.
