Sandra Lynne McMillan

Sandra 'Sandy' McMillan, 75 of Akron, Iowa, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at the Akron Care Center.

Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2026 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron with Pastor Trish Underberg officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue until the service time on Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Akron Care Center.

Sandra Lynne Radtke was born on September 26, 1950 in Akron, Iowa to Wayne and Arlene (Hoffman) Radtke. She was raised in Akron and graduated from Akron High School.

Sandy was united in marriage to Kenneth ‘Kenny’ McMillan on April 6, 1968 in Hawarden, Iowa. They lived in Hawarden for a few years before moving to the Radtke farm outside of Akron. There they raised their three children: Kimberlee, Kerrie, and Kory. Once the kids were older, they then moved into Akron.

Sandy worked for several years as the assistant manager at Casey’s in Akron. She then began working at the Akron Care Center in the dietary department. She worked her way up in the department until she was the Dietary Manager. She retired after 28 years due to health complications from a stroke.

Kenny cared for Sandy for several years at home before she became a resident of the Akron Care Center in 2019.

Sandy’s role as the dietary manager was a perfect fit for her. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and she showed her love through feeding her family and friends. She had many specialities including bread pudding and coffee cake. If you left her home hungry, it was your own fault. She made meals with all the fixings every night of the week and she loved hosting holiday meals. She made mints for many weddings and graduations parties, always gifting the treats to the party hosts. She also made cutout sugar cookies with the grandkids for every single holiday.

Her dedication to the Akron Care Center didn’t stop when she clocked out for the day. She used her talents to coordinate an annual Christmas Cookie Club fundraiser for many years and a cookbook sale with the proceeds of both benefiting the Akron Care Center.

When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She loved hosting movie nights for her grandchildren and taking trips with her friends. She was a member of the Next Gen Women’s Club and served as president for several years. She loved to read and take care of her many indoor house plants. She and Kenny both enjoyed decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas.

Sandy is survived by her husband of 58 years, Kenny; three children: Kimberlee (David) Heyl of Akron, SD, Kerrie (Doug) Olson of Akron, and Kory McMillan of Le Mars, IA; grandchildren: Amanda (Nathan) Ackerson of Fort Dodge, IA, Quinn (Kristina MaComb ) Heyl of Le Mars, Jarett (Carli) Heyl of Elk Point, SD, Arlena (Trenton Tooker) Heyl of Akron, Spencer (Jada Lembcke) Olson of Sioux Falls, SD, Natalie Olson of Ames, IA, and Kendra Olson of Akron; great grandchildren: Zyra Heyl, Beckett Heyl, Weslie Heyl, Emmeline Heyl, Axel Ackerson, and Genevieve Heyl; siblings in law: Dennis (Sandy) McMillan of Akron, Kelvin (Janet) McMillan of Hawarden, IA, Edward (Karma) McMillan of Chatsworth, IA, and Lorna (Donald) Cross of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and many friends.

Sandy is preceded in death by her parents; parents in law, Elmer and Genevieve McMillan; brother, Gordon Radtke; and sister, Denise Bringman.
