Shirley Pauline Waag , 84, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the Alcester Care and Rehab Center in Alcester, South Dakota.

Shirley Pauline Barnhardt was born June 24, 1936 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Dewey and Meda (Apgar) Barnhardt.  She grew up near Chariton, Iowa, where she attended school.

She was united in marriage to Raymond Waag on June 1, 1962 in Russell, Kansas.  Shirley and Ray made then made their home in Akron.  Later, they moved to a farm in Union County, South Dakota.  Shirley worked for Otis Radio in Hawarden for 14 years.  She also worked as a dietary cook for the Akron Care Center and later for Hillcrest Health Care in Hawarden.  After Ray's health declined, they moved back into Akron.  Ray passed away March 27, 2018.  Shirley continued to make her home in Akron until moving to an apartment in Alcester.  She was currently a resident of the Alcester Care and Rehab Center, where she was fortunate to have her granddaughter Heather help take care of her.

Shirley was a hard worker and would help Ray on the farm.  She enjoyed going out to eat, cooking, and her "sweets".  Shopping and trying her luck at the casinos were also what she enjoyed.  Most of all, she loved the time spent with her family.

Survivors include her 2 sons: Paul (Ginny) McFarland of Alcester, SD, and David (Vicki Norton) McFarland of rural Akron, IA; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Charles Barnhardt and Clyde (Linda) Barnhardt, all of Chariton, IA; a sister: Alice Jean (Larry) Wheeldon of Chariton, IA; two brothers in law: Clifford Waag and Donald Waag, both of Akron, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Meda Barnhardt; her husband, Raymond Waag; two brothers: Richard Barnhardt and Bud Barnhardt; a sister: Marlene Halton; and a sister in law: Shirley Ann Waag.
