Tom attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City and Westmar College in Le Mars where he graduated with his teaching degree.

Tom was united in marriage to Mary Kay 'Kaye' Hames on June 6, 1964 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. They made their home in Le Mars where they raised their four children: Jill, Gary, Krista, and Holly.

Tom primarily worked as an 8th/9th grade earth science teacher. Tom taught for over 30 years and after his retirement, he continued his teaching outside the classroom to all those around him.

Besides teaching, Tom was a talented craftsman; he built many homes in the Le Mars area among remodeling homes and other projects, including the roof on the carousel in Foster Park. Tom and Kaye built their retirement home on an acreage in east Le Mars. Tom loved maintaining the property, spending lots of time mowing and tending to the numerous apple trees. Tom also had a great sense of humor and could strike up a conversation with anyone.

Tom is survived by his four children and their families: a daughter: Jill (Ron) McKay and children: Alexis (William) Sheeren, their children: Brooks & Chandler, and Ryan McKay; a son: Gary (Meredith) Kurth and children: Jaxson and Tyler; a daughter: Krista (Dan) Plueger and children: Hailey and Jacob; a daughter: Holly (Ryan) Kinning and children: Max and Corinne; siblings in law: Jacki (Jim) George, Rose Hames, and Neil Sitzmann; nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
