Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Langel , 70, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 3, 2020 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Social distancing and wearing a mask will be required. Reverend Rick Sitzmann will celebrate Mass with Reverend Bruce Lawler concelebrating. Burial with military provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery – Neptune, rural Hinton, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. There will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Social distancing and wearing a mask will be required. Services will be uploaded to the funeral home website following the services. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .

Thomas Edward Langel was born November 10, 1950 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Victor and Eileen "Toots" (Anthony) Langel. He grew up in Plymouth County, Iowa and graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1969.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1969. He served aboard the USS Cocopa during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1972. Following his service, he returned to Le Mars, and farmed with his family.

He was united in marriage to Kathy Sitzmann on June 21, 1975 at St. Joseph Catholic Church – Neptune. They made their home on a farm in Plymouth County. Tom grain farmed and fed cattle, hogs, and sheep. Tom was a member of the Iowa Pork Producers for over 40 years and was named Master Pork Producer in 2015.

Tom was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church – Neptune for many years and had served on church council. After the parish closed, he became a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the board for the Farmers Coop in Hinton and Oyens. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing slow pitch softball, basketball, and enjoyed bowling. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and trying his luck at the casinos! He was proud supporter of Gehlen Catholic and enjoyed attending their activities and events. He also enjoyed riding his Honda trike. Most of all, he loved the time spent with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Le Mars; 5 children: Carmen (Tom) Sieburg of Yutan, NE, Josh (Shannon) Langel of Le Mars, IA, Stephanie (Alan) Brown of Hartford, SD, Luke (Laura) Langel of Le Mars, IA, and Cody (Kristi) Langel of Le Mars, IA; he was "Papa" to 17 grandchildren and one great grandson; 4 siblings: Gary (Cindy) Langel of Le Mars, IA, Linda (Dave) Ahlers of Remsen, IA, Sue (Merle) Huls of Le Mars, IA, and Bruce Langel (BillieJean Ring) of San Antonio, TX; and several in laws, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vic and Toots Langel; his father and mother in law, Jim and Joan Sitzmann Sr, a granddaughter, Aurora Grace Langel; a brother in law, Bradley Sitzmann; two nephews, Todd Huls and Michael Ahlers; and a niece, Samantha Erdmann.
