Varold Voss, 93 of Akron, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at his home in Akron.

Following Varold's wishes, there will be a private family interment at St. John's Cemetery - Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa.

Varold Jurgen Voss was born on September 11, 1928 to Arthur and Bertha (Renken) Voss in Madison, South Dakota. He grew up in rural Akron and attended a local country school. Their family later moved to Le Mars where he attended Le Mars Community School. At the age of 16, Varold left school after the 11th grade to work fulltime on the railroad to support their family. Varold was drafted into the United States Army on January 8, 1951 and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. While on leave, Varold was united in marriage to Lois Frerichs on August 22, 1951 at St. John's Lutheran Church – Preston Township. Varold was then stationed as a paratrooper in Fort Campbell, Kentucky during the Korean War. Varold was honorably discharged in January 1953. Varold and Lois made their home back in rural Akron, Iowa onto Varold's family farm. Varold and Lois farmed together for over 50 years. In their early years, they milked cows and grew crops. They eventually built their farm to include raising poultry, cattle, and hogs. Varold also worked at Swift Packing Plant during the winter months. They retired and moved into Akron in 2002.

When they weren't farming, you could find Lois and Varold dancing. They spent many Friday and Saturday nights with their friends on dance floors across the midwest. Varold loved to go fishing. He had a yearly fishing trip to Canada and enjoyed his South Dakota fishing adventures with his grandchildren and the Book brothers. He enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, and played in several card clubs. He also loved the yearly pheasant hunting weekend their family held every October.

Varold was a previous member of Christ Lutheran Church in Grant Township, rural Le Mars, Iowa and was a current member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa where he served the church in many capacities including church council and cemetery board member. Varold was also a long-time member of the Heeren-Mc Hale-Wilkens Post 724 in Brunsville, Iowa where he was a previous Legion Commander. He and Lois took several trips with the legion for meetings and conferences.

Varold is survived by his daughters: Diane (Larry) Moffatt of Akron, IA and Carrie (Dan) Pfeil of Akron, IA; eight grandchildren: Travis (Meagan) Moffatt of Akron, IA, Sheila (Curt) Swoyer of Akron, IA, Jason (Kaitlyn) Moffatt of Akron, IA, Natasia Eastman of Sioux Falls, SD, Roman (Sara) Eastman of Bismark, ND, Sheriden Eastman of Van Alstyne, TX, Bethany Eastman of Akron, IA, and Taylor (Roy) Card of Harrisburg, SD; eleven great grandchildren: Tragan Moffatt, Alexa Swoyer, Allie Swoyer, Alivia Swoyer, Kenley Moffatt, Kailyn Moffatt, Jhett Moffatt, Braxden Eastman, Liam Eastman, Zaleigh Eastman, and Grady Card; sister, Ona Dean Fara; nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Varold is preceded in death by his wife, Lois; parents; parents in law, George and Elnora (Schmitt) Frerichs; and siblings in law: Virgil (Bonnie) Frerichs, Shirley (Gary) Popken, and Orland Fara.
