Viola 'Vi' Katherine (Strobel) Schroeder

Viola ‘Vi’ Schroeder, 92, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church. Father Doug Klein will officiate. Burial will be at St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery in Oyens, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday and following the service during a time of lunch and fellowship, all at St. James Catholic Church. Viola Katherine Strobel, the daughter of Albert and Magdalena (Ziegler) Strobel, was born on the family farm on December 17, 1933, in Bethune, Colorado. She grew up in the German settlement north of Bethune. She attended country school until the eighth grade, and then graduated from Burlington High School in Burlington, Colorado. She attended Yankton College in Yankton, South Dakota, where she graduated with a degree in elementary education.

Following college, she moved to Le Mars where took a job teaching in the Le Mars Community School District. She met her future husband, Robert ‘Bob’ Schroeder. They were united in marriage on August 23,1958 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. They were married for 62 years. Vi taught elementary school for a few years before staying home to raise her two children. She returned as a third grade teacher with the district until her retirement after 33 years of teaching.

Vi was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars where she sang in the church choir, helped with funeral dinners, and the church’s Smorgasbord for many years. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and bowling. Spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids was the joy of her life. Traveling to Arizona with friends and Colorado to visit family was something both Bob and she always looked forward to. Vi also enjoyed playing the piano, cards and games. She took the game of Rummikub very seriously and enjoyed teaching the game to her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was a member of PEO, Chapter NQ and AAUW (American Association of University Women). She volunteered for the Alzheimer's Association , she was a member of the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #241.

Survivors include a son, Michael (Nancy) Schroeder of Granger, IA; a daughter, Terri Schroeder of Le Mars, IA; granddaughters: Kristen (Matt) Miner and Keni (Tom) Tiernan, both of Granger, IA; great grandchildren: Brantley Miner, Naomi Miner, Norah Miner, Cal Miner, Aubree Tiernan, Quinn Tiernan, and Kase Tiernan; siblings: Alvin Strobel of Burlington, CO, Art (Connie) Strobel of Bethune, CO, and Butch (Sandee) Strobel of Greeley, CO; in laws: Beverly Strobel of Windsor, CO, and Carine Schroeder of Doon, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Schroeder; great granddaughter, Sienna Miner; parents, Albert and Magdalena Strobel; her father and mother in law, Clarence and Loretta Schroeder; siblings: Arnold Strobel and Calvin Strobel; in laws: Barb Strobel, Eugene Schroeder, and Mary (Herbert) Montgomery.

The love of her family was monumental. She will be greatly missed by many.
