Wayne Albert 'Herk' Von Hagel, 75 of Akron, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron. Expressions of sympathy may be expressed to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com .
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Wayne Albert 'Herk' Von Hagel was born on December 11, 1947 in Akron, Iowa to Wayne Arnold and Susanna Lavonne 'Bonnie' (Hill) Von Hagel. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran CHurch in Akron, Iowa where he had 14 years of perfect attendance at Sunday School.  Herk attended school in Akron and he graduated from Akron High School in 1966. He was united in marriage to Margaret 'Vicki' Kerr on September 1, 1967 and they later divorced.
Herk attended Westmar College in Le Mars before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He served at various duty stations including being stationed in Vietnam and flew 147 combat missions as a helicopter door gunner. Herk was proud of his service to his country. After Herk was honorably discharged due to a medical disability, he returned to Akron. Herk worked several jobs over the years but he most enjoyed managing Brown's Lawn Service.
Herk was united in marriage to the love of his life, his angel Pam, on April 16, 1982 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. He was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he served in a variety of roles including chairman of the administrative board. He was a member of Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron where he was a past commander. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Herk enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and bowling. He loved to garden; having grown many roses and vegetable gardens over the years. He volunteered as an EMT-ERT for Akron Fire-Rescue for 12 years and was a member of the response team to the Flight 232 crash near Sioux City, Iowa. Herk was proud to be currently sober and celebrated 11 years of sobriety in November 2022.
Herk is survived by his wife, Pam; son, Robert (Angela) Von Hagel of Le Mars, IA; daughter, Heather (Gordon) Johnson of Akron, IA; special nephew, Clark (Sam) Von Hagel of Sioux City, IA; his six grandchildren: Tyler (Hannah) Johnson of Ida Grove, IA, Ashley (Brian Scott, fiance) Johnson of Mission, SD, Samantha (Cody) Davis of Omaha, NE, and Conner, Emily, and Heather Von Hagel all of Le Mars, IA; two great granddaughters: Tori and Morgan; a great grandson due in July 2023; two brothers: Don (Pat) Von Hagel of Enid, OK and Charles (Diane) Von Hagel of Akron, IA; mother in law, Jeannette Quick of Akron, IA; brother in law, Roger (Tracy) Quick of Creston, IA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended relatives.
Herk is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Susan Terrell; father in law, Lyle Quick; and two furbabies: Callie and Dulce.
